What is a Grid Boost?

Grid Boost is a sustainable solution for temporarily increasing the power capacity of an existing grid connection. In many situations, the available grid capacity is not sufficient to meet energy demand, such as on construction sites, charging hubs, industrial warehousing, distribution centres or temporary housing projects. With Grid Boost, grid capacity is enhanced without the need for a physical grid upgrade. The setup is often used for larger connections (400A or more) or at locations where the grid is insufficient to power the load.

How does Grid Boost work?

In a Grid Boost setup, an energy meter continuously measures the grid intake. When power demand approaches the maximum capacity of the grid connection, the battery automatically supplies additional power to the load. This prevents grid overload and maintains a stable power supply during peak periods. This can be done with multiple batteries in parallel making grid boost infinitely scalable to cater for any variable load.

During off-peak hours, or when demand is low, the battery recharges from the grid.

Grid Boost is ideal when temporary  power  demand exceeds what the grid can deliver, or when grid congestion is a problem. It also provides an effective solution for projects waiting for a grid upgrade.

How does Greener apply Grid Boost?

Greener supplies batteries that can be easily connected to an existing grid. Our specialists first assess the project’s power requirements and design a suitable configuration. The batteries are then delivered and installed on-site.

With our Energy Management Software, power consumption is monitored 24/7 and the batteries are controlled automatically. This ensures a reliable system that runs smoothly without interruptions.

Grid Boost applications across different sectors

Construction and Infrastructure

On construction sites, energy use is often high and fluctuating, while grid capacity is limited. Heavy electric machinery such as cranes, pile drivers and pumps requires significant power. With Grid Boost, you can instantly add temporary extra capacity to an existing grid connection without waiting months for an upgrade.

The battery automatically provides additional power when demand increases and recharges during lower demand periods. This effectively boosts grid capacity without needing changes to the setup. It prevents downtime, saves fuel and allows construction projects to continue without interruption.

Events

Events and festivals often experience strong peaks in energy demand. A standard grid connection rarely has enough capacity to handle these peaks. Grid Boost expands grid capacity with batteries, removing the need for diesel generators to cover high-demand moments.

The setup provides temporary grid reinforcement that delivers peak power when needed whilst keeping the supply stable. It creates a quiet, reliable and emission-free energy solution that can easily be scaled to the size of the event.

Grid Services

The grid is increasingly overloaded due to electrification of equipment worldwide, leading to grid congestion and long waiting times for new or upgraded connections. For many businesses, this causes delays or halts planned expansion.

Grid Boost offers a sustainable and practical solution. Adding mobile batteries to an existing grid connection temporarily increases grid capacity onsite. This reduces network strain and delivers peak power on demand, allowing existing infrastructure to be used more efficiently. For companies, it means projects can move forward even in areas with limited capacity.

During periods of low demand, the battery can also store energy, for instance from renewable sources. It then delivers that energy during high-demand periods, helping stabilise the grid and lower emissions.

EV-Charging

The shift to electric mobility requires substantial charging power, especially at logistics hubs or charging depots where multiple vehicles charge at once. Often, grid capacity is too limited to meet this demand. Grid Boost temporarily adds extra capacity to the existing grid connection.

This temporary grid reinforcement enables EV charging even at sites with limited capacity, without delays or expensive infrastructure upgrades. Electric vehicles can recharge, enabling the EV charging site to always remain operational.

Shore Power

Ships that are docked often require more electricity than the shore connection can deliver. In many ports, this is still managed using diesel generators, causing both emissions and noise pollution. Grid Boost provides a clean, emission-free solution by temporarily strengthening the shore connection with additional capacity provided by batteries.

This increases available grid capacity without emissions or noise. The setup is quick to install, scalable and easy to integrate with renewable energy sources. As a result, shore power becomes more reliable, quieter and more sustainable, even where grid capacity is limited or congestion is an issue.
