Main results:

  • Flexible Hybrid Set-Up – Integrates grid power, a Stage V generator, and an AMF system for reliable energy supply.
  • Peak Shaving – Reduces demand on the grid and generator by supplying stored energy during peak usage.
  • Significant Emission Savings – Reduced generator use by 2,978 hours, saving 46,188 litres of fuel and cutting 14.9 tonnes of CO₂ and 707kg of NO.
  • Detailed Incident Tracking – The EMS records and analyses power events to enhance efficiency and reliability.

EMISSION-FREE POWER AT ONE OF THE UK’S MAJOR FILM STUDIOS

In partnership with Supply 2 Location, one of our Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) has been delivering emission-free power in a hybrid set-up at a major UK film studio. Since October, this collaboration has achieved significant cost and emission savings, including a reduction of 2,978 generator running hours, 46,188 litres of fuel, 14.9 tonnes of CO₂, and 707kg of NO.
Connected to a 125A grid and a Stage V generator via an Automatic Mains Failure (AMF) system, it ensures the flexibility and reliability required for the complexities of film production. An Automatic Mains Failure (AMF) system is a smart controller that automatically detects power failures and switches to an alternative power source, such as a generator or battery storage system. It provides power with a break, monitoring the grid and activating backup power when needed. Once the grid supply is restored, the AMF smoothly switches back, preventing disruptions and maintaining operational stability.

RELIABLE, FLEXIBLE POWER

Greener batteries play a vital role in hybrid energy set-ups, working alongside diesel generators and grid power to optimise efficiency and sustainability. By storing excess energy and supplying power during peak demand, batteries help minimise generator runtime, reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and noise on set. They can act as a reliable backup when grid power is unstable, ensuring a steady and adaptable energy for build and development of the production. This hybrid approach enhances sustainability without compromising the high-energy demands of film production.

On 22nd November, the connected grid supply experienced a trip. The battery ran until it had to shut down due to a low state of Charge (SoC). This triggered the AMF to start the Stage V generator. Our in-house Energy Management System (EMS), Greener Projects, documented the incident in detail, capturing both the disruption and the battery’s performance. Following the incident Supply 2 Location asked to be notified when the battery charge drops below 50%. A request we’re easily able to fulfil with Greener Projects.

Documentation is essential for projects with complex energy needs. It enables continuous improvements in efficiency and reliability, making it possible to change set-ups with the needs of the project. Our Service Engineers are dedicated to providing the best possible service and adapt to clients’ changing needs. Combining advanced battery hardware with intelligent software, we deliver a resilient and sustainable energy solution that ensures film productions can operate smoothly, even in the face of unexpected power disruptions.

Todd Trent, Regional Group Director at Supply 2 Location:

“The service we have received from Greener has been flawless, from the initial installation support with setup, to the notifications of any issues, generally before we are aware of a problem. We are notified if the SoC depletes below 50%, I have access to an app where I get hourly notifications of the BESS health state, access to the full remote monitoring….. as well as receiving monthly performance reports, that I can re-issue to the client’s sustainability team.

Supply 2 Location Ltd. have supported the Film and TV sector for 16 years, and over this period we have seen the demand for how power required has transitioned. On this project, we had access to a 125-amp 3 phase utility supply approx. 200m away, and after careful planning, it was agreed that using a Greener 318kVA/422kWh BESS unit was the best application to harvest and boost the existing supply to the clients load requirements. ”
