Greener living for four tower blocks
Construction company Hemubo has tried a battery for the first time, as part of a large-scale sustainability renovation in an Amsterdam neighbourhood. The four residential towers are undergoing extensive maintenance. The façades are being replaced, insulation is being improved, and the homes are being connected to district heating. This will take the buildings completely off gas, with cooking becoming fully electric.
Such a major renovation requires a significant amount of energy, in particular for the large tower crane mounted on the roof. The existing 80A grid connection was insufficient, making a Greener battery the perfect solution.
Batteries are not only more sustainable, they’re often much more cost-effective as well. They reduce fuel consumption, generator maintenance costs, and noise pollution. Still, batteries remain a new concept for many construction companies. Most prefer the familiarity of diesel generators over trying something new. Fortunately, Hemubo was willing to take the leap.
Trying out a battery solution
To manage peak energy demand, Hemubo and Greener chose a 422 kWh mobile battery. The battery was used for peak shaving, meaning it charges during low-demand periods and discharges when energy demand spikes. This ensures a stable power supply across the site.
Gert Nieborg, Project Manager at Hemubo, shared:
“This is our first project using a battery on a construction site. We were keen to give it a try and have been positively surprised. Working with Greener has been seamless: quick, personal, and with excellent service.”
A great example of this was an early-stage issue: when Nieborg arrived on site one morning, a Greener technician had already resolved a problem before Hemubo was even aware or affected by it.
The project is set to run until mid-July 2025. With sustainability high on its agenda and a strong first experience with Greener, Hemubo expects to work with mobile batteries much more frequently in the future.
