Test: charging electric construction machines

Ballast Nedam wants to limit emissions from the construction industry. That is why they want to use electric construction machines. But how does is work and what is required? Together we carried out a test at the construction site of Ballast Nedam Road Specialties in Aalsmeer.

“I look back on a good collaboration with Greener. Communication went smoothly. Greener’s technical people quickly carried out the on-site action.”

Result: grid connection of 80A is required

During the test, we charged an electric excavator with our battery and a fast charger. The test circumstances were:

  • We charged the battery using a 63A grid connection.
  • We drove the battery back and forth to the electric excavator, which means that there was consistently little time to recharge the battery.
  • The battery charged the excavator with a charging time of 100kW.

A grid connection of at least 80A is needed

The test showed that a 63A grid connection is too small to recharge the battery sufficiently in limited time windows and provide enough power to the electric excavator. A minimum grid connection of 80A is required to make the fast charging process efficient in this specific situation.

Working together towards emissions-free construction sites

Fast charging electric construction machines is possible, but the correct charging conditions must be met, such as the appropriate grid connection in this case. We are proud to be working with Ballast Nedam to optimize testing and fast charging of electric construction machines, and to work together towards emissions-free construction sites and accelerate the energy transition.
