Peak Shaving

Hybrid Set-Up Evolution – This case shows a set-up can move from initially being run by a generator to being operated silently by a battery with a small grid connection, saving cost and emissions
Peak Shaving – Reduces demand on the grid and enables the set-up being run with a smaller grid connection, eliminating the need for a generator altogether
Complex needs made simple – Greener’s expertise delivered a simple, yet effective solution based on existing infrastructure and data gathered via our EMS
Significant Emission Savings – Reducing generator hours by 6205, saving 62,524 litres of fuel, cutting 202 tonnes of CO₂ and 968kg of NOₓ. First in a hybrid set-up with a generator and now with a battery enabling the units to run off a small grid connection by peakshaving.

DATA DRIVEN OPTIMISATION

In partnership with Power Electrics, one of our Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) has been delivering silent, emission-free power for to mobile scanning units at a health care facility. Our battery is enabling a grid connection, that was initially deemed too small to do so, to power the project by peak shaving. This was made possible by correctly assessing the needs of the units on site, by our data gathering via our EMS, and adapting the set-up accordingly after discussion with the client.
Now, two scanners and one treatment support unit, are being run by a small grid connection and a Greener battery, silently, emission free and cost effective. Compliance with regulatory standards is especially important in the context of healthcare connected to government contracts. Greener has made this project easily emission free.

GRID SHAVING MRI & CTI SCANNERS

Initially there was only one scanner on site, run by a 275kVA generator, as is the currently accepted industry standard. Then site expanded and with it, it’s power needs.
The updated site, comprising of two scanner units and one treatment support unit, was initially projected to run for 1-2 years. A power solution was needed as a local grid connection was deemed too small to power the projects, due to scanners’ high startup currents. The project was initially powered by a 500kVA generator, leading to emissions and noise pollution.

Adding a Greener battery in a hybrid set-up already led to multiple advantages:

• Saving fuel by reducing generator running hours
• Enabling silent running at night
• Reducing the size of the generator to 275kVA
• Reducing emissions (CO₂ and NOₓ)

After gather data with through the Greener EMS it became clear that an even better set-up was possible. The big scanners units are known produce high inrush currents when starting up, meaning the total available power needs to be able to meet this high demand, whereas the power demand for running the unit once it had started up are much lower. This is a common power demand pattern and ideally solved by peak shaving with a Greener battery. Peak shaving using batteries involves storing excess energy during off-peak hours and releasing it during peak demand periods to reduce reliance on the grid and lower energy costs.
Analysing data gathered with our EMS in the battery identified much lower startup and running currents than were in the electrical design for the scanner. This meant that a smaller grid connection can be enough to delivery high peak loads if paired with a battery.
This is a game changer for existing sites with restrictions in terms of infrastructure and regulations. Greener has the expertise and technology to truly understand the actual power needs of your site. Gathering data via our EMS, our experts create tailored power set-ups, that enable to make any project easily emission free.

“This project came with its fair share of challenges, especially with how quickly things were growing. When the number of medical scanners on site doubled, it looked like the only option was to bring in much larger generators. But after a detailed site study, we found there was a small grid supply available, which changed the conversation.By taking a closer look at the load profiles and patient flow, we realised we could run multiple scanners and treatment rooms using far less power than we initially thought. That opened the door to making full use of the battery system and its ability to charge and discharge efficiently. With support from our strategic partner Greener, and a custom-built distribution panel from our in-house team, we were able to avoid running a 500kVA generator around the clock. Instead, everything was powered from a compact 50-amp, three-phase grid supply. That’s a major shift in how we approach these kinds of setups.Working with Greener on this and other projects has allowed us to rethink how we deliver power. It’s helping us reduce costs and speed up NHS project mobilisation from weeks to just days. And it’s all made possible by smart planning, the right technology, and strong collaboration.”
