- Grid capacity increased with Greener batteries
- Jumbo supermarket was able to open on time
- Close collaboration with energy consultant Enerzien
Supermarkets are increasingly facing grid congestion during new builds, renovations and sustainability projects. In other words: a shortage of electricity. That is why Jumbo turned to Greener. Together with Enerzien, the independent advisor on electricity generation, storage and congestion issues, Greener developed a solution. Read below how the branch was still able to open as planned.
Jumbo opens new store despite grid congestion
For the opening of a new branch, Jumbo found that the available capacity of its electricity grid was insufficient. To be able to start construction, Jumbo applied to the grid operator for a grid upgrade. Due to congestion issues in the Netherlands, this upgrade was not available in the short term. Jumbo did not want to wait unnecessarily. The company therefore worked with independent advisor Enerzien to find a temporary solution. They found this in Greener’s mobile batteries: quiet, sustainable and immediately available. This allowed the new store to open at the planned time.
Peak shaving: stable power supply during peak demand
Grid congestion issues can be effectively solved with ‘peak shaving’. This means that mobile batteries supply additional energy at times when more capacity is needed. Is your energy demand lower, for example after closing time? Then the batteries recharge. This ensured that Jumbo always had sufficient power while waiting for the permanent solution.
Rick Peters of Enerzien: “The most important thing for Jumbo was to act quickly and have a technically sound solution. Even in the preliminary phase, we noticed that the people at Greener are fast and committed. They take their customers’ challenges seriously and deliver on time.”
Insight into energy consumption thanks to the Greener dashboard
Based on available data from Jumbo itself and historical data from previous projects, Greener designed a strong set-up. After installation, the battery system was further optimised based on new data collection. This allowed the branch to easily bridge the three-month waiting period, after which the grid operator permanently upgraded the connection. Greener’s total solution also includes access to a dashboard. This gave Jumbo insight into the battery’s impact and energy data such as power, current per phase, kilowatt-hours and consumption. With this data, the supermarket chain can further advance sustainability at other locations.
