High diesel consumption due to peaks

Denys is an expert in complex construction projects and provides the Council of Grimbergen (BE) with a number of horizontal drillings. The drilling rig used has high start-up peaks and a high nominal consumption during the drilling. However, consumption and power requirements are much lower between drilling and during the night. This creates inefficiency and high diesel consumption.

Battery used to peak shave

First of all, Greener installed an energy meter to monitor the peaks. Based on this information, Greener deployed a battery as a peak shaver on a diesel generator. The battery absorbs the start-up peaks and ensures that the generator runs optimally. This leads to diesel savings and fewer emissions. The project also ran completely on battery power at night. This way, there was no night-time nuisance from emissions and noise in the city center.

“In our mission to reduce our carbon footprint, we will continue to investigate the use of batteries on site. Greener supplied us with a 336kWh / 318 kVA battery container that easily absorbed power surges from the drilling rig.”
